Alda
Milner-Barry's association with the House of Commons
dates back to 1969 when she had joined the House after
completing her honours degree in history from Newnham
College, Cambridge. Joining the House of Commons
Secretariat, called the Department of Clerk, she moved
through Journal and Public Bill Office to the Committee
Office in 1974-77. She served as the secretary to the
Parliamentary Committee on Earl Attlee Memorial. Her
other assignments were in the Overseas Office and
Private Bill office. In 1984 she worked as the Clerk to
Employment Office.
In
between these assignments she had brief stints in
Germany (1978), France (1971), Germany again and Canada
in 1992. She has also had temporary service with
Assemblies of Council of Europe, Western European Union,
North Atlantic Assembly and Inter-Parliamentary Union.
Presently, Alda Barry is co-ordinating advice to
Northern Ireland Office and acting as Commons Clerk to a
Joint Select Committee.
