Barrister Rabia Bhuiyan, MP

Barrister Rabia Bhuiyan is the first woman Barrister of Bangladesh and also a distinguished parliamentarian. A senior lawyer of the Supreme Court, she was a Minister in 1986-87 and her parliamentary life to date extends over two terms. Born in 1944 in a very respected educationist family she had a very distinguished educational career, topping the list in her honours examination in Dhaka University. She passed her Bar examination from Lincoln’s Inn, UK, and was enrolled as a Barrister-at-Law. She obtained her BCL from the University of Durham, UK. Her focus is on Family Law, Criminal Law and Constitutional Law.

Barrister Rabia Bhuiyan was a member of the Parliament from 1986 to 1988 and was again elected in 1996. Apart from her law practice she also teaches law and is presently the Principal of Bhuiyan Academy of Law and Business Administration. She is actively associated with a number of associations, both political and social. She has a number of publications to her credit mainly on the subject of women and gender issues.

Barrister Rabia Bhuiyan has attended more than one dozen international conferences and was elected Vice Chairperson of Ministerial Conference of the Non-Aligned Countries held in Delhi in 1985. In addition to politics and her legal practice she is also involved in social work. It is here that she came in close contact with Mother Teresa while working for abandoned girls and children afflicted with leprosy. Barrister Rabia Bhuiyan is married to Mr. A.K.M. Mozammel Haque Bhuiyan, also a Barrister, and has a daughter and a son.

 

Professor Panna Kaiser, MP

Prof. Panna Kaiser, born in Borura, Comilla in 1947 has been active in public life since her early teens. Her husband, Mr. Shahidullah Kaiser, was one of the most progressive of our writers and journalists and was killed by the hated Al-Badar Cadres-the collaborators of the Pakistan Army on the eve of the Liberation of our country. She has a post graduate degree in Bengali from the University of Dhaka.

Since 1972 she has been an activist in propagating the values of our War of Liberation and was one of the members of the Nirmul Samannay Committee. She has also been involved with women’s affairs through her association with the Bangladesh Mohila Parishad and has been active in the empowerment of women and of issues relating to gender discrimination. She is a Presidium Member of Khelaghar, the premier children’s organisation in the country and has led many delegations overseas on behalf of Khelaghar. She has introduced the Shahidullah Kaiser and Sattyen Sen Memorial Award. She has also founded a number of libraries and high schools.

Her major involvement has been in the field of re-establishing in our society the ideals and spirit of our glorious War of Liberation. She is a prolific writer and besides publishing regularly in newspapers and journals, has authored 22 books mostly on the theme of “Muktijuddher Chetona” and women’s issues. She has visited many countries in the capacity of member and leader of various delegations including children’s, women’s and Parliamentarians’. She a Member of the Bangladesh Parliament from one of the reserved seats for women.
