Children Gallery

A separate gallery exclusively for the children below 12 years was established in Bangladesh Parliament in September 2012.

Honourable Speaker at that time Abdul Hamid Advocate announced the inauguration of Children’s Gallery in the 14th session of the Parliament.

This allows schools to bring children under 12 years to observe and learn about House proceedings as part of Parliament’s efforts to enhance citizen’s awareness and civic education about its work. As expressed by the Speaker, the Children’s Gallery has been established to instil democratic values in students from their childhood.

The Speaker observed this practice in the Australian Parliament during a study visit supported by Improving Democracy through Parliamentary Development (IPD) project of UNDP. He announced this initiative during piloting of Youth Parliament supported by IPD-British Council in February 2012.

"It was an exciting moment for all of us to get an opportunity to see the Prime Minister and Members of the Parliament and proceedings of the House for some time," a joyful class five Student, Shetu Rahman, said. "I have watched such events on TV, now I have observed Parliamentary proceedings sitting in the Children’s Gallery," he said after his first-ever visit to Parliament.
